Project overview

The project entitled “Data-Driven Retention and Outcome Predictor (DROP)” (project ID: 2024-02-HU01-KA220-HED-000295434) aims to implement a coordinated, comprehensive development initiative across partner institutions. As a result of this collaboration, the participating universities will develop the capacity to predict student dropout and enhance their activities that support student success and prevent attrition.

Student dropout is a challenge faced not only by the partner institutions, but it is also considered a Europe-wide issue. Although numerous important scientific findings have emerged over the past decade and a half regarding the causes of dropout, the proportion of students leaving higher education has remained stable at 35–40%, indicating no significant reduction. The partner institutions are committed to tackling dropout, and their experience shows that traditional tools alone are insufficient. Effective reduction requires new, innovative, and data-driven solutions.

The primary objective of the DROP project is to develop a dropout-prevention methodology and intervention model, implemented through two key stages.

First, using the administrative data available at the institution and applying data mining methodologies, the project will identify students at risk of dropping out. With the support of the predictive models developed within the project, institutions will be able to establish a digital early warning system capable of signalling, in real time and at the individual student level, who is most at risk.

Second, continuing to build on administrative data, the project will provide personalised interventions that directly target the factors potentially causing dropout (e.g., difficulties in academic or social integration, lack of career commitment or orientation, financial challenges, etc.). This approach enables a shift away from the traditional dropout-prevention practices that rely heavily on students’ proactive help-seeking, replacing them with a proactive institutional support model.

J. Selye University in Komárno was established on October 23, 2003, by the National Council of the Slovak Republic under Act No. 465/2003 Coll., which entered into force on January 1, 2004. János Selye University is the only public higher education institution in Slovakia with independent legal status that provides instruction in the language of a national minority – Hungarian – and at the same time represents the highest level of the educational system spanning from kindergarten to university. The establishment of the university constitutes not only a unique and historic moment in Slovak higher education, but also in the history of the European Union.

As part of the European higher education area, J. Selye University considers it its mission to pursue high-quality educational and scientific activities at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels; to foster a knowledge-based society, moral values, harmonious personal development, and creativity; and to cultivate free thinking and scientific research. By opening opportunities for Hungarian-language higher education in Slovakia, the university aims to gradually increase the number of Hungarian young people with higher education degrees and to raise the overall level of education within the Hungarian community in Slovakia. Better qualifications can ensure equal opportunities for Hungarian youth in the labor market, potentially leading to reduced unemployment and economic development in regions inhabited by Hungarians. In this way, the institution seeks to contribute to the social and economic advancement of the region.

J. Selye University promotes the formation of a Hungarian intellectual community that can become a pillar of the national community, whose members, thanks to their language skills, are also able to succeed in an international context. The university is an open-type higher education institution in which the principles of multiculturalism, freedom of thought, independence, responsibility, humanism, democracy, creativity, originality in scientific research, and dialogue between teachers and students prevail. In addition to education, the university fosters scientific activity; it integrates the Hungarian scholarly community in Slovakia into the international academic sphere and establishes connections with international networks of scientific institutions. It serves as a regional center of scholarship and plays an active role in the social, economic, and cultural life of the region.
